Francesca's story
See that girl in the black trousers and green/blue top? The one smiling (grimacing) but really not delighted to have a camera pointed in her direction? Well, that is me - was me, I should say.
I've struggled with my weight and relationship with food for my entire life but it finally reached crunch point in early 2024. Everyone has their rock bottom, don't they? I was wondering when mine would show up and then - bam! - there it was.
I was on my way to a work thing, a big conference, and had to stop at M&S to pick up a larger pair of black trousers - as I had, once again, run out of things that fit me. I stood in front of the changing room mirror and sobbed. I didn't recognise the woman staring back at me, and I didn't like her. At 5'4, I was 94kg (14.8 stone) and obese. I was sad, frustrated and furious with myself.
I knew that it was going to require a significant step change to get me on the right track. But I couldn't face another boring, restrictive diet. You name it, I've tried it, and I had no more 'try' left in me.
Little did I know that just a few months later, a bucket list trip to Italy would show me the answer. As soon as we landed, I was captivated by the traditional Italian approach to eating and moving. I loved the lack of guilt around food, the enjoyment Italians seemed to get out of preparing, sharing and eating it, the simple but delicious recipes, and the absence of any extremes when it came to both food and exercise.
They break all of the diet 'rules' with their pasta, pizza, wine and gelato. Yet, as of 2024, Italy is still one of the healthiest, least obese, and longest living nations in the world.
This was an approach that I could follow, I thought. No diet shakes, no carb cutting, no stomach-growlingly low calorie counts. I threw myself into finding out as much as I could about Italian food (and exercise) traditions, and decided I would emulate them as much as I could when I returned to the UK.
Fast-forward eight months, and I had lost 40kg (6.2 stone), six dress sizes and my BMI had moved from obese to healthy. I'm now a UK size 8. Even I can admit that the results have been pretty mind-boggling.
You probably won't believe me but I wasn't bothered about sharing it, other than through my little accountability accounts on social media. The Britalian Diet (as I nicknamed it) was my secret. But people tend to notice when you've lost almost half your body weight! Friends, work colleagues, family and mums at the school gate kept sidling up and asking me how I had shed the pounds. So, I relented and wrote it all down.
Hopefully, it will land in front of someone that needs it as much as I did. That would make me unbelievably happy.
